Metro-area players to watch
Mitchell Parker, jr., LHP, Manzano: Parker had a huge offseason and, along with Trevor Rogers of Carlsbad, is one of the top two southpaws in New Mexico. Already committed to UNM. Must-see viewing when he’s pitching.
Garrett Gouldsmith, sr., SS, Rio Rancho:
Gouldsmith is a slick-fielding, extremely polished defensive player and handy with the stick. One of the state’s best all-around players.
Jonathan Stroman, sr., RHP, La Cueva:
Stroman has developed a better breaking pitch, giving him two out pitches. He has signed with Arizona, last year’s NCAA national runner-up.
Joe Martinez, sr., OF/LHP, Sandia Prep:
Martinez is a Class 4A superstar. He’d get more publicity at a larger school, but he belongs on this list. Tends to perform well in big moments, especially on the mound.
Thomas Braybrooks, sr., RHP, Albuquerque Academy: This is the Chargers’ workhorse on the bump. After high school, he is off to West Point. He’s got a very reliable, powerful arm.
Josiah Armijo, sr., RHP, Volcano Vista: The Hawks’ heir apparent to Tanner West throws in the upper 80s, possesses an outstanding curve and has terrific control. Definitely someone to watch.
Jack Murano, jr., RHP, Cleveland: Committed to UNM already, this is the metro’s most physically imposing presence on the mound at 6 feet, 7 inches.
Jack White, sr., RHP, Cibola: He is part of UNM’s next recruiting class, along with Rio Rancho’s Gouldsmith. Will be expected to produce in big games for the Cougars, especially in that district.
Mitch Buffett, sr., RHP/IF, St. Pius: Buffett has great bloodlines. His older brother Tyler last year was a Major League Baseball draftee. Mitch has signed to play for New Mexico State.
Bohdi Bolen, jr., RHP, Rio Rancho: Bolen gets it done more on craftiness than do some of the power pitchers on this list. He was an invaluable piece of the Rams’ run to the state final last May.
