ABQ Journal makes list of ‘Ten Newspapers That Do It Right’
HomeStyle section, other features cited by E&P trade publication
The Albuquerque Journal was named to this year’s “10 Newspapers That Do It Right” list, compiled by E&P magazine for papers that achieve growth in “circulation, revenue and engagement.”
E&P, or Editor & Publisher, is a trade publication covering the newspaper industry. It featured the 10 newspapers on the annual list in its March magazine that were chosen from among 70 nominations submitted.
“We are very excited Editor & Publisher, on a nationwide quest, has featured our efforts as one of ‘10 Newspapers That Do It Right,’” said William P. Lang, Journal publisher.
“Joe and his staff are to be congratulated as they work toward expanding our reach of the Albuquerque Journal, either print or digital, and with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta,” Lang said, referring to Joe Leong, vice president and chief revenue officer for the Albuquerque Publishing Co., which publishes the Journal.
The Journal’s nomination cited its HomeStyle real estate publication, which made its debut inside the newspaper’s Life in New Mexico magazine in May, and became a standalone section in October. Published on Fridays, more than 86,000 copies are distributed to Journal readers and more than 3,500 copies are delivered to grocery stores, real estate offices and related businesses, according to the Journal.
Much of the HomeStyle content — which includes profiles of local individuals and companies, features on new homebuilding, and design features and tips for buying or selling your home — comes from the local real estate industry. “Even if you’re not looking for a house, you will find something interesting,” Leong said.
The related website, ABQJournal.com/ homestyle, has search capabilities for multiple listing services and open houses in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas. The Journal also was recognized for:
Adding “text to” features to print classified ads under a system developed by SkyBridge Mobile. A reader who sends the coded text gets a link to a website that provides more information about the ad, including a “click to call” feature, photos and social media links.
Working with the 2016 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on an official app for the event.
Outsourcing classified ad functions so managers could focus more on selling ads to local retailers.
