LIGHTING UP LIVES

Memphis May Fire aims to inspire hope in fans

- BY ROZANNA M. MARTINEZ OF THE JOURNAL

The theme that carries throughout all of Memphis May Fire’s records is hope.

“I think that heavy music is awesome,” frontman Matty Mullins said. “I’ve always loved heavy music, but I think there are a lot of people who come to these shows and they’re looking for something real. They’re looking for hope and looking for a foundation in the their life, and I’ve always wanted to let people know it exists and that’s real. No matter what you’re struggling with, it’s important to acknowledge your struggles and to admit that you’re struggling. There’s nothing wrong with struggling. It’s very OK to not be OK, but that hope exists — that hope is real and that tomorrow can be better than today.”

Memphis May Fire shows its growth as a band on its latest album, “This Light I Hold.”

“‘This Light I Hold,’ as far as lyrically, vocally, melodically, instrumentally, everything about the record feels very mature compared to what we’ve put out in the past,” Mullins said. “We worked with a different producer for music on this one, and it was a really cool experience. It really got us out of our comfort zone, and it really felt like a giant step forward, a giant step toward what Memphis May Fire has always needed to be. We’re really excited about the record.”

Memphis May Fire is continually at work and is already writing for it’s next album.

“We never stop writing,” Mullins said. “We want to be the band that consistently puts out music for our fans that are hungry for music and consistently puts out better music than we have in the past, and I think I can confidently say that we’ve done that again, so I’m really so excited.”

Fans will have to wait until the summer to hear a new track from the band. For now, it wants its audiences to digest “This Light I Hold,” released in October.

In addition to his work with Memphis May Fire, Mullins holds a webinar, a few times a year, to help younger fans interested in a career in music.

“It’s so supercool, and anytime I can do something like that, it’s a complete honor for me,” he said. “I love to give people the inside scoop on what the music industry really looks like and answer questions they might have with complete honesty so that they know exactly what they’re getting themselves into ,and hopefully that they will avoid some of the mistakes that I’ve made so that their career path could be a little smoother.”
