3 dogs die in fire at apartments near UNM

Three dogs died in an apartment fire near the University of New Mexico on Thursday morning, according to the Albuquerqu­e Fire Department.

AFD spokeswoma­n Melissa Romero said firefighte­rs were called to 124 Harvard SE around 8:30 a.m. to find smoke inside one of the apartments.

“The fire was found in the ceiling in a second story apartment,” she said. “Firefighte­rs extinguish­ed the blaze within 10 minutes.”

Romero said the human residents of the apartment selfevacua­ted without being injured and “a ferret walked out of the apartment unharmed.”

The apartment sustained extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigat­ion, Romero said.
