Muñoz takes another bout at last minute

‘Boom-Boom’ Gonzales ready to fight tonight in Chicago

Albuquerque boxer Hector Muñoz’s nickname is “El Huracán,” but he also legitimately could fight under the moniker “El Rey del Breve Aviso” — “The King of Short Notice.”

Muñoz (25-18-1, 17 knockouts) announced Wednesday on social media that he’ll face fringe contender Artemio Reyes (23-2, 19 KOs) tonight in a six-round welterweight bout on a card in Burbank, Calif.

The Albuquerque fighter was in Denver sparring with former world champion Mike Alvarado when he got the offer. Muñoz has taken many fights on short notice against fighters with excellent records, explaining why a once-highly successful local and regional fighter lost 17 of 22 bouts between October 2008 and June 2016. But when the call came from Burbank, he said, well, of course.

“The short notice king to the rescue,” Muñoz, 38, posted on Facebook. “I’m hungry and ready this time no excuses.”

Despite Reyes’ glossy record, a fight-by-fight examination of that record suggest he’s not as good as some of the others — world champions or world contenders like Antonin Decarie, Mike Jones, Shawn Porter, Yoshiro Kamegai, Brad Solomon, Danny O’Connor, Jermall Charlo, Alfredo Angulo — Muñoz has fought and lost to in the past.

The Top Rank, Inc., card, headlined by a 10-round lightweight bout between Casey Ramos (23-1, six KOs) and Miguel Beltran Jr. (31-5, 21 KOs), is scheduled to be telecast in Spanish on USA UniMas at 9 p.m. It is not known if Muñoz’s bout will make the telecast.

BOOM-BOOM’S BACK: Well, actually, she’s never been gone.

Moriarty’s Brenda “Boom-Boom” Gonzales Means (4-1, one KO) is scheduled to face Jessica McCaskill (3-1, two KOs) tonight in a six-round lightweight bout at the UFC Pavilion in Chicago.

This will be Gonzales Means’ first boxing match since August 2014, but she’s had six MMA fights in the interim. She’s 8-3 as an MMA fighter.

Her only loss as a boxer came in February 2013 in Albuquerque via unanimous though disputed decision against Amanda “Boom-Boom” Crespin of Las Vegas, N.M. — yes, the battle of the Boom-Booms — at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albuquerque.

Gonzales Means is the wife of fellow MMA fighter (and occasional boxer) Tim Means. They both train in Albuquerque at FIT-NHB.

According to boxrec.com, there is no telecast of the Chicago card. UPCOMING: FIT-NHB MMA fighter Sidiah Parker (17-6) is scheduled to defend his King of the Cage middleweight title against Detroit’s Brandon Hunt (9-9) Saturday in Wyandotte, Mich. According to King of the Cage, the card will be telecast on MAV TV. DirecTV’s listings do not reflect that, however.

... Santa Fe boxing promoter Pat Holmes returns to Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino on May 13 with a six-bout card, featuring Española’s Antonio “Tone” Martinez, Rio Rancho’s Bryant McClain and Los Lunas’ Manuel Eastman.

Martinez (7-2-4, five KOs), a welterweight, is scheduled to face Ben Vasquez (3-3-1, three KOs) in a rematch of a May 2016 bout that resulted in a draw.
