Lobo softball preps to host Spartans

- JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRES

The forecast suggests the New Mexico Lobos softball team (20-20, 6-9) will be fighting the weather as well as competing with San Jose State (29-15, 9-6) during their scheduled three-game Mountain West Conference series beginning today. UNM already has moved up today’s game to 1 p.m., four hours earlier than originally scheduled, in hopes of dodging the brunt of the rain and cold. Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m., and Sunday’s at noon.

Lobo Shelbie Franc is hitting .435, tops in the league. The Spartans counter with ace Katelyn Linford (19-7, 2.40 ERA) whose 167 strikeouts are the most of any conference pitcher.

NMSU: In Las Cruces, the Aggies (22-20, 10-2) host Grand Canyon (34-14, 9-3) tonight at 6 and Saturday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. NMSU needs one series win over GCU to clinch a share of the WAC regular season title.
