Debra Landau is taking on the biggest production AirDance New Mexico has ever done. And she’s excited. “It’s quite the extravaganza and technical spectacle,” the artistic director says.
The company will present “Pentimento” this weekend at AirDance AirSpace in the South Valley.
A pentimento is a trace of an earlier painting beneath layers of paint on a canvas, and Landau says the AirDance show is a multilayered show.
For “Pentimento,” the company took inspiration from a number of art masters and went a step further and created a visual show designed by Antony Baca, which is projected onto screens.
Works by Picasso, Klimt, Van Gogh, Dalí, Hopper, Escher and Degas are interpreted in dance on the ground, in the air, and on stilts.
“We’ve never been able to do anything this interactive,” Landau says. “The art will be projected on three screens. It’s the biggest thing we’ve taken on. We’ve been working on it since January.”
Landau says there are nine aerialists from the company in the show and
one special guest — performer Charlie Faraday will join the company for the show. Faraday will be performing on silk.
“She’s a performer with Cirque du Soleil and is on the roster for Marvel Universe,” she says. “She’s pretty hot stuff.”
Also performing in “Pentimento” are aerialists Cortney Baca, Tasha Books, Christina Cavaleri, Diana Delgado, Monica Demarco, Joanna Furgal, Tara Kolberg, Zachary Sears, and Gina Shorten.
There will also be live original music throughout by a cappella quintet of Christy Cook, Monica Demarco, Marya Jones, Gena Lawson, and Mauro Woody.
