New Mexico’s Smith lands late ride on 15-1 shot

- FROM JOURNAL REPORTS

New Mexico native Mike Smith appeared to have a ride with a major Kentucky Derby contender.

The Hall of Fame jockey had secured the mount on Bob Baffert’s undefeated colt Mastery. However, Mastery was injured during the running of the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita and his Derby trail abruptly ended.

Now Smith has a ride with Girvin (15-1 on the morning line), the winner of the Louisiana Derby and a horse he has never ridden. Girvin’s regular rider, Brian Hernandez Jr., chose to ride McCraken (5-1) in the Derby.

Meanwhile, Smith was honored by California’s legislature last month. The Assembly recognized him for his “leadership” and “sportsmanship.” It also recognized California-bred Arrogate, who is ridden by Smith regularly, and is the all-time leading moneywinner among American thoroughbreds.

HENCE: Sunland Park Derby winner Hence is listed at 15-1 on the Kentucky Derby morning line. The colt bred by Calumet Farms won the Sunland race by 3¾ lengths March 26.

PLETCHERS: Todd Pletcher, the Hall of Fame trainer, spent some of his youth at Ruidoso Downs. His father, J.J. Pletcher, won the 1975 Kansas Futurity with Chicks Deck. Todd was working in his father’s barn at the time.

Todd Pletcher will saddle Always Dreaming (5-1), Tapwrit (20-1) and Patch (30-1) at Churchill on Saturday.

The Downs at Albuquerque will carry the Kentucky Derby as part of its simulcast package. Derby Day will include live music at the grass amphitheater.

Ruidoso Downs will open its All American Turf Club at noon Saturday with simulcast wagering in the Billy The Kid Casino opening at 8 a.m.
