- By cathy hobbs / tribune news service

With the warm weather officially here and flowers beginning to bloom, many homeowners may be looking for interesting and creative ways to display floral pieces. Flowers don’t just have to be placed in a vase and can be real or artificial, both potentially as beautiful. While fresh flowers are fragrant and gorgeous, artificial arrangements may be an attractive, maintenance-free home decor option. When looking to incorporate floral pieces into your home decor, here are some top design recipe tips.

things to do

Look for color and texture. Flowers are a wonderful opportunity to create interest, so consider a “no floral” option such as succulents and grasses, which can be very appropriate for modern environments. Another option to try is using pure white flowers. In certain environments, white flowers can feel really crisp, clean and fresh. Experiment with different types of vessels and containers--often opaque or graphic patterns can create interest. Consider using floral arrangements of different heights in your space. It can really help to create an increased sense of drama.

things not to do

Try not to just use clear glass vases and containers, because your vase is an opportunity to bring color into your decor. Many dismiss artificial floral pieces as an option, but the artificial floral industry has come a long way with a host of very realistic and attractive options. Bathrooms and kitchens need some love, too, so don’t forget to use blooms in those small areas to add a pop of color. The most important tip is to not overdo it. Too many flowers in a space can come across as overpowering and unappealing. Stick to classic colors, black flowers and even those that are in interesting or mixed shades may be appealing and attractive.
