HELP TO STAMP OUT HUNGER
In ABQ food items left by mailbox will benefit Roadrunner Food Bank
Letter carriers will be collecting nonperishable food items today all across the country.
Today is Stamp Out Hunger day throughout the U.S. and in the greater Albuquerque area. And it’s your chance to join the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
All you have to do is fill a bag with nonperishable food items and leave it near your mailbox. Letter carriers will pick it up for a hunger-relief organization near you, organizers said in a news release.
In Albuquerque, Roadrunner Food Bank will benefit, as will hundreds of similar operations
nationwide. The food drive is taking place in 10,000 communities in the U.S. and in towns throughout New Mexico.
Visit www.rrfb.org for a list of nonperishable food items requested, including canned meats, fruits, vegetables, cereal, beans, rice, condiments, boxed pastas, sauces, shelf stable milk, peanut butter, jelly, and any pop-top single serve items.
The Roadrunner Food Bank in a news release wanted to thank New Mexicans ahead of time for their participation.
Residents of other communities throughout the state likely received a post card in their mail earlier this week, indicating announcing the nationwide food drive and that their local town or village also is participating.
In related news, a special honor was recently given to Roadrunner Food Bank president and CEO Melody Wattenbarger. She was recognized as this year’s John van Hengel Fellow.
Van Hengel is credited as the “father of food banking.” He founded the world’s first food bank in Phoenix and helped grow the food bank concept into what is now a national network of food banks, according to a news release.
