HOROSCOPES BY HOLIDAY

-

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (May 14): Your social life will include a large number of intelligent, interesting people who inhabit worlds outside the ones you know from your family and work life. Great luck and money will come from a process of not understanding things, trying to figure them out and then finding a niche within that you can work to a high advantage. Leo and Gemini adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 20, 44, 3 and 16.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You’re looking for something, but you don’t know what it is exactly. It’s an answer to a feeling — an echo to the call of your heart. Stay open. You might be surprised by the form of this solution.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Gathering a few opinions is better than going blind into the situation. As long as you’re doing this, do it right. Search the top people for the brightest insights.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21): There are too many choices. You can’t take it all in. You’re excellent at scanning and selecting. Trust your instincts. Your quick decisiveness will be your success key today.

CANCER (June 22-July 22): You’re in the mood to try new things, talk to different people, watch, listen and record your findings. From these wide and seemingly disparate bits of life, you will cull your next great idea.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Great photographers know that you have to be positioned well to get the interesting angle. Much will depend on where you’re standing. Put yourself in a position for the prime view.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): When you don’t know what to ask of the situation, start wide. “Have I been curious enough about what’s going on?” This general line of self-prompting is enough to spur you in a helpful direction.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23): Real behavior is different from theoretical behavior. People may see themselves as being great at demonstrating love or health or work ethic. Reports will be far less reliable than actual results.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21): You’ll be planning a few weeks into the future to make sure that there’s a lot of fun ahead of you and only as much tedium and trepidation as is absolutely necessary.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A real friend lets you talk a little nonsense and respects you anyway. You’re this kind of friend, and you afford this luxury to your nearest and dearest, although you may wonder today where exactly to draw the line.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A grateful heart brings health and joy for the entire being, but it would be a shame to stop there. “Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.” — Gladys Bronwyn Stern

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The complexities will confound you if you let them. Instead, try to focus on one thing and one thing only: kindness. By doing the kind thing, you’ll also be doing the very best thing.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What feels normal to you is totally foreign to another. Keeping this in mind, you’ll go out of your way to make sure that the others feel included and comfortable and that the lines of communication are open.

FORECAST FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: Though it is traditional to link flowery, saintly and sweet associations to the holiday that celebrates mothers, the actual work of motherhood mostly centers around far less lovely things. The practical and logistical efforts necessary in the care and development of young humans aren’t usually glamorous or pretty. In fact, there are so many tedious, grimy details involved that one might say that the sweetness of motherhood is more readily seen in the long view — when the cumulative effect of hours and days and years of tending is embodied in a human who seems to be doing just fine.

This Mother’s Day, the Taurus sun and Capricorn moon sway the cosmic omens away from sentimentality and toward an appreciation of the basics. Unlike those of other animals, human babies are utterly helpless and dependent. However the maternal forces have kept you alive, that’s what counts. Many will be inclined to give back to Mom. (Wonderful!) It should also be noted that the best thing excellent mothers can ever receive is the knowledge that their children have internalized the maternal instinct to care for, nurture and support themselves to the best of their ability in all their days going forward.
