More companies make list of Top Workplaces

- BY CHARLES A. MOORE JOURNAL BUSINESS EDITOR

So, first the good news: More companies than ever have made our Top Workplaces list. Now, the better news: We didn’t change anything, they did. Forty-five companies out of 75 surveyed had scores high enough to make that list. That’s five more than last year, even though participation was about the same.

This year’s list includes 17 new companies, but much of the list looks pretty familiar. Nine businesses and organizations have made the list all five years that we’ve worked with WorkplaceDynamics to find the best workplaces in New Mexico: Children’s Choice Child Care Services Inc.; Edward Jones; FootPrints Home Care Inc.; Indian Pueblo Cultural Center/ Indian Pueblos Marketing Inc.; Mark Pardo SalonSpa; Nusenda Credit Union; Santa Ana Star Casino; Souder, Miller & Associates; and T-Mobile US. And another five — The Range; Car Crafters; Nor-Lea General Hospital; ERA Sellers & Buyers Real Estate; and Bradbury Stamm Construction Inc. — have appeared four years.

Maintaining that kind of consistency isn’t necessarily easy, but Santa Ana Human Resources Director James Stevens says it’s worth the effort.

“It’s helped unify us,” he told Journal staff writer Kevin Robinson-Avila. “It’s become our goal to stay strong and keep trying for the No. 1 spot year after year.”

The 75 organizations that agreed to participate in the survey process this year employ 30,996 people in New Mexico. Of those employees who received questionnaires, 16,313 responded, either on paper or online.

A variety of factors make up a healthy workplace, which WorkplaceDynamics CEO Doug Claffey explains in a column later in this section. You can also read about what goes into a top workplace from employees and managers at this year’s top companies.

Finally, Top Workplaces is more than a popularity contest. WorkplaceDynamics employs a strict methodology to ensure the results have meaning. That, too, is explained in this year’s coverage.

The front of this week’s Business Outlook is devoted to celebrating these organizations’ success. You’ll find most of our regular Outlook features in the pages following the Top Workplaces coverage.
