AROUND THE STATE

HERON LAKE: The water level continues to rise. Boat ramps at La Laja and Ridge Rock are both accessible to all boats. At Ridge Rock, the beginning of the ramp is underwater and not visible. To launch, go down beside the wooden walkway. You have plenty of space to the southeast or righthand side as you face the lake. Fishing is still pretty slow from boats, but a few nice rainbow trout and some salmon are being caught trolling 12 to 22 feet deep. Salmon are not yet schooling and pretty well spread throughout the lake. Fishing from shore has slowed somewhat from previous weeks. Camping is great with many space available for RVs. All restroom and other accommodations are well-maintained and usable. Don Wolfley, Stone House Lodge

EAGLE NEST LAKE: The annual Pike and Carp Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact the Eagle Nest Fly Shack at 505-485-8328.

SUGARITE: The annual Sugarite Canyon State Park Fishing Derby sponsored by the Friends of Sugarite Canyon State Park and the Raton Kiwanis Club will be held from Saturday through June 4. Call 575-445-5607.
