“Under Paul’s leadership, the University of New Mexico has grown into one of the premier programs in the Mountain West, academically and athletically, and that’s a great reflection of the championship culture that Paul, his coaches and administrative staf
“Paul is also a strong voice within our conference, bringing perspective on issues of national significance, and representing the Mountain West in several capacities.
“We thank Paul for his service to our conference and wish him the very best.”
– Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson
“I thank Paul Krebs for his outstanding leadership of UNM athletics. His tenure will go down as the most productive and successful in school history. Paul has tried to retire several times over the last year, and now I finally have reluctantly agreed to accept his retirement. Paul and Marjori (Krebs, Paul’s wife) have been very active in serving the University community, our city and our state. I wish Paul the best in his retirement.”
– UNM Interim President Chaouki Abdallah
“While I am pleased that Mr. Krebs resigned from UNM Athletics, our investigation of this matter is ongoing. Even if a public official leaves office, they can still face legal consequences for actions they took while in office.”
– NM Attorney General Hector Balderas
– NM Auditor Tim Keller
“UNM President Abdallah stated that the tenure of Paul Krebs ‘will go down as the most productive and successful in school history.’ How quickly they forget...or weren’t around? While Krebs did some good (and not so good) things for UNM, Pete McDavid’s tenure from 1956-1974 produced the construction of University Stadium, the Pit and the UNM Championship Golf Course. McDavid also helped create the WAC conference, of which UNM was a member for almost four decades. I also don’t recall any turmoil during the McDavid years. Krebs or McDavid? Lobo fans can make the call.”
– N.M. Old Timer (via Speak Up!)
“Kreb$$$ is gone!! I’m going to O’Neill’s and TOAST his departure.”
– MHD (via Speak Up!)
“I will always appreciate Paul Krebs giving me the opportunity to be the head coach at UNM. Joanne and I wish Marjori and Paul all the best in the future.”
– Lobos football coach Bob Davie
“I’m impressed with the many accomplishments he’s made, particularly the graduation numbers they’ve had. I hate to see him go . ... I really saw the passion for UNM of a lot people (when he decided to make the donation), particularly Marjori (Krebs), and therefore Paul to me. That’s got to be Paul’s passion and commitment, also.”
– Larry Chavez, Lobo booster & owner of Dreamstyle Remodeling
“I feel badly. It’s unfortunate that Paul’s retiring because he was a very good committee member even in just his one year of service, and I think the world of him.”
– NCAA vice president Dan Gavitt to CBS Sports on Krebs no longer being on the NCAA men’s basketball selection committee
