Trumpeter Bobby Shew to perform at June 10 benefit for historic Corrales church
In Corrales, the Old San Ysidro Church is a hub of the community.
The Corrales Historical Society is celebrating its 43rd year of managing, maintaining and preserving the historic Old San Ysidro Church, affectionately known as “a great lady of a certain age.”
An adobe structure, one that began life in 1868, this great lady is always in need of loving attention.
The society and Debbie Clemente are putting together a benefit to raise money for the church.
“It’s taken about four months to plan the event,” says Clemente, publicity chair. “It takes a lot of money to keep the church looking great.”
Clemente says re-mudding, roof repair, lighting and electrical upgrades and much more have been at the forefront of the society’s efforts because after some flooding in 2014, structural problems began to surface.
She says there are ongoing concerns of the many CHS members who devote hundreds of hours keeping the church complex in good repair.
“This is an invaluable service as the old church continues as a cherished community gathering place in the Historic heart of Corrales,” she says.
To help keep this great lady aging gracefully, world-renowned trumpeter Bobby Shew will be performing a benefit concert at the old church at 7:30 p.m. June 10.
Titled “A Tribute to the Great Ladies of Jazz,” the concert will feature the Bobby Shew Quintet and singer Carla Van Blake performing jazz classics from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Carmen McRae and more.
Albuquerque native and Corrales resident Shew has had a love affair with his trumpet and jazz since the age of 10. He has performed with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and others, and he has the stories to go with the music.
“Once Bobby said yes to the event, things started moving forward quickly,” Clemente says. “Bobby lives in Corrales now and is a great addition to the community.”
