Leave the flag out of any disagreements with Trump

- BY MICKEY COE CORRALES RESIDENT

To the individual who flies his flag at half mast until the next election and to the one in Corrales who flies his upside down and any other child who decides they don’t like Trump so they show their ignorance and displeasure with our democratic system via the flag. Do you really understand what our flag is? And I direct this to the Albuquerque Journal editor who decided to run the “half mast” opinion letter on Memorial Weekend.

So what is the flag? This is what it means to me: It represents all who have fought for this country and stood by it through all of the difficult times of over 200 years. It is the blood shed on battlefields abroad and ashore for our country, our democracy. I pledge allegiance to the flag for which it stands, one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all.

When I held the head of my Marine in combat and he looked at me and said, “save the flag, sir,” I wasn’t thinking of lowering it to half mast in protest for his death, nor having it upside down in front of my house! When I was in the embassy in Beirut when it blew up and I finally made it outside, the first thing I looked at was the flag still flying. When I lost over 50 of my Marines in the (Beirut) Barracks bombing, I wasn’t draping the flag upside down on each of their coffins as they came off the plane in honor for their country.

When President Obama was elected, I didn’t agree with the choice, but our democratic system caused him to be elected twice. I didn’t protest, cuss, burn buildings, spit on speakers, yell (at) speakers at colleges, shut down free speech, or lower my flag or drape it upside down. I was proud of our system of democracy and went on with my life knowing that we had chosen our leader.

I didn’t back Sen. (John) Kerry because I remember the disgrace he brought our country at the end of the Vietnam war. He wasn’t “Swift Boated,” he just forgot those of us that unlike him, served honorably for our country. When Hillary (Clinton) was selected to (run to) represent our country, I didn’t vote for her because she was a Democrat, I believed she was an unindicted criminal who committed acts that any other American would have gone to prison for.

So I voted for (Donald) Trump. Not a politician, but a successful businessman. He was elected, fair and square, like it or not. Yet, children of the Socialist Democratic Party have done everything to derail his presidency! Wait, tried to derail our presidency! Leaks of top secret information is commonplace and appears to be accepted by these children of the Democratic Party? And then proudly an American decides he will fly his flag at half mast until the next election or drape it upside down in “distress”?

I am dishonored by people who conduct themselves like that and wonder if it was worth being blown up in the American Embassy in Beirut or receiving three Purple Hearts, several bullet wounds and over 30 shrapnel wounds for people like that? I am ashamed of people who do what they are doing by dishonoring those who have given so much for this country for over 200 years. I include the Albuquerque Journal editor who decided to run the letter on Memorial weekend.

God Bless America
