Broncos QBs mixing good with the bad

Ex-Lobo Bell earns $150K weight bonus

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The biggest offseason position battle in the NFL — Denver’s QB sweepstakes featuring Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian — has been nothing but a tease.

Coach Vance Joseph said Tuesday that the evaluation won’t truly start until training camp next month.

On the first day of the Broncos’ mandatory minicamp Tuesday, both quarterbacks were mistake-prone one snap and magnificent the next.

“They’re both getting better,” Joseph said. “Again, it’s hard to give a true evaluation right now with these guys because there’s so much learning going on. It’s been positive plays by both guys. It’s been big throws by both guys. It’s been some terrible throws by both guys.”

COWBOYS: Dallas offensive lineman Byron Bell, a UNM alum, collected $150,000 when he weighed in under 320 pounds Monday. Not a bad workout bonus for early June during the offseason.

Bell, who grew up an hour east of Frisco and signed with the Cowboys in free agency this March, said the money wasn’t his primary incentive to lose.

“I guess when you’ve got something behind it, you work a little harder,” Bell said Tuesday from Cowboys minicamp. “I did it, but I needed to lose weight anyway because of the history of my family.”

Bell’s family runs on the bigger side, he said. And weight complications have proved tragic. Bell’s father died of a heart attack at age 29.

PATRIOTS: Julian Edelman, 31, is a step closer toward playing his entire NFL career with New England after signing a contract extension that will run through the 2019 season.

REDSKINS: Ex-Redskins QB Doug Williams has been named Washington’s senior VP of player personnel. He has been with the team as a senior personnel executive since February 2014.
