BASEBALL

ALL-STATE PICKS: The New Mexico Baseball Coaches Associatio­n has released the 4A All-State teams and numerous local players were honored: Second team, pitchers Robbie Alarcon, West Las Vegas, and Sean Latham, St. Michael’s; second base, Brandon Montoya, Taos; outfield, Chross Jaramillo, Pojoaque Valley, and Kye Aguilar, Santa Fe Indian School; utility, Richard Armijo, Robertson. Honorable mention, pitchers Daniel Aguilar, Taos, and Nathan Aguilar, Pojoaque Valley; first base, Tyrone Green, Taos; catcher, Jonah Baca, St. Michael’s; outfield, Jude Mondragon, St. Mikes; utility, James Archuleta, West Las Vegas; designated hitter, Santiago Mondragon, West Las Vegas.

In 4A softball, second team pitcher Kendra Duran, Robertson, was the only local player honored.

COACHES

NEW HIRES: St. Michael’s has hired Valerie Sandoval as its new volleyball coach. A St. Mike’s graduate, Sandoval has a daughter and a stepdaught­er on the team.

Hernando Chavez, who has been the eighth-grade girls coach at Taos Middle School for the past six years, has been named the boys head coach for Taos High School. Chavez has also been an assistant coach for the Tigers cross-country and track teams.

ATHLETICS

TOP TOPPERS: Nicholas Quarties and Sienna Ahlers were named the Los Alamos High School top male and female athletes of the year. Quarties was the Hilltopper­s quarterbac­k, and also played baseball and golf, while Ahlers was a leading soccer player in the state, and also played basketball and ran track.

HELPING HAND: Thanks to a Las Vegas couple, New Mexico Highlands University will get new turf for its football field, as well as a new-look athletics building. Leveo and Patricia Sanchez donated $500,000 to replace the football field, along with another $100,000 to renovate the Stu Clark athletics building.
