Father’s Day fest at JCC features running, swimming events
The Jewish Community Center of Albuquerque wants to help families celebrate Dad. On Sunday, June 18, the JCC will host it’s annual Father’s Day Fitness Festival.
And this year has some new events.
“We made a little bit of a change to the program,” says Dave Simon, JCC executive director. “We used to do a 5K run, and it was popular, but there are a lot of 5K runs out there. We have a brand new track at the facility, so we’re going to host some events there.”
The 2017 Father’s Day Fitness Festival includes five events:
Adult swim meet: 50 freestyle, 100 individual medley, 500 meter freestyle, dads/kids relays.
400-meter race: Runners will compete to set the JCC track record.
Golf events: drive, chip and putt competitions.
Soccer skills contest: penalty kick and ball-handling skills.
Ninja Obstacle Course for kids.
Simon says the competitions are open to men, women and children. Hundreds of dollars in cash prizes will be awarded for top finishers (men’s and women’s categories), along with other great prizes.

“We are doing this multidimensional fun event,” he says. “It’s aimed at the whole family. Kids will be able to participate in selected events.”
The JCC recently built new soccer courts and will have some events on the field.
“Our field is one of the only small cage style soccer courts in town,” he says. “Think of it as a hockey rink with AstroTurf. There’s already a soccer club who calls it home.”
In previous years, the Father’s Day event hosted the Samson Challenge, a Crossfit competition.
Simon says the event has moved to the fall this year.
“Last year, it was really hot during the event,” he says. “We don’t want to have anyone get hurt in the heat, so it made sense to move it to a later date.”
Simon wants the community to get involved with the event.
“This event celebrates fathers, families and fitness,” Simon says. “Competitors can also win prize money, then take Dad out for brunch.”
