COMIC ROUTINE

Bill Engvall draws laughs from stories about daily life

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR

Bill Engvall’s comedy comes from his daily life. And it can be heard on his weekly podcast, “My Two Cents with Bill Engvall” on PodcastOne, or in his comedy special “Just Sell Him for Parts.”

“My comedy has changed over time,” he says in a recent phone interview. “Years ago, I would talk about my children. They are now grown up and doing their own thing. One thing is for sure: People can connect to my type of comedy.”

Engvall will be the special guest at Legacy Church’s Beast Feast tonight.

The event features exotic meats, gun raffles and comedy show. It is an event aimed at men.

For the past few decades, Engvall has had a successful career in comedy, TV and film.

Most recently, the Grammy-nominated comedian appeared on the 17th season of “Dancing With the Stars.”

Engvall says the experience on the competition has definitely worked its way into his routine.

“I learned so much about myself,” he says. “I also was coming off knee surgery.

There was a lot to overcome, and I put myself out to the world in a different way. Twenty million viewers seeing me and getting to know me. That show has an amazing reach.”

Although comedy is Engvall’s bread and butter, he is slowly pursuing a movie career.

He wrapped up a film called “Monster Party,” in which he plays a father who’s addicted to gambling.

“I want to find roles that people don’t expect me to take,” he says. “Of course, I’m hoping for a lead role on a big project.”
