In our cover story, Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts previews “The Leekya Family: Master Carvers of Zuni Pueblo,” which opens Saturday at the Albuquerque Museum. The exhibition is a long overdue showcase of the work of Leekya Deyuse, the founding father of Zuni fetish carving.

The dynamic art form will have a permanent home when the Zuni Fetish Museum and Center for Indigenous Art Studies opens its doors next year in Old Town.

Roberts also profiles sculptor Upton Ethelbah, the first Native American artist to be featured at the New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair, which opens next weekend.

Features writer Elaine D. Briseño takes us to the Los Ranchos Growers’ Market, a community undertaking marking its 25th year this summer. The market is a place where small-scale farmers and artisans can sell their wares in a family-friendly atmosphere, complete with live music under the shade trees.

And if the recent heat has your rose bushes struggling, Features writer Rosalie Rayburn offers advice from local experts on how to keep the beauties happy and healthy.

David Steinberg reviews Irene I. Blea’s “Beneath the Super Moon,” the final book in a trilogy about a northern New Mexico Hispanic family’s history and culture.

Until next week, Helen Taylor
