UNM tops MWC in Director’s Cup

The University of New Mexico picked up more Learfield Director’s Cup points than any other Mountain West school for the fifth time in six years.

The Lobos, with 423 points, finished 61st overall, fifth among all non-Power 5 institutions.

Women’s cross country and skiing earned New Mexico its most points.

It is the 15th consecutive year that UNM has finished in the top 75, and the ninth straight year inside the top 65. It was 63rd last year. UNM’s best finish was 41st in 2011-12.

In the fall, UNM secured points in women’s cross country, men’s soccer and football. In the winter UNM scored in skiing and men’s indoor track and field. In the spring, UNM earned points in men’s outdoor track and field, men’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field.

Stanford, which recorded national championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s swimming and diving and women’s water polo, topped the Director’s Cup standings.

Ohio State, which won the men’s volleyball national title, was second. Florida, national champ in baseball, men’s outdoor track and field and women’s tennis, was third.

Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports in NCAA Division I — 10 men’s and 10 women’s.

With 94.5 points, New Mexico State finished 158th of 293 schools that scored.
