Prince Royce hits the road as latest album goes double platinum

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Getting ready for tour requires Prince Royce to endure a lot of rehearsal time.

It’s because he wants everything to be perfect.

“I’m so excited and happy to be going on tour,” he says in a recent phone interview. “We’re doing 21 dates, and my album has already gone double platinum.”

The year has been spectacular for the 28-year-old musician.

In February, he released his fifth album, “Five.” The album is a return to Prince Royce singing primarily in Spanish.

The album features collaborations with Chris Brown, Farruko, Zendaya, Gerardo Ortiz, Arturo Sandoval and Shakira.

In fact, the single “Deja Vu,” features Shakira and has been streamed more than 20 million times online.

The single sparked sales of Prince Royce’s album and helped his audience grow.

Prince Royce was born Geoffrey Royce Rojas in Bronx, N.Y.

He began experimenting with music and writing poetry.

In 2010, he released his debut album.

Prince Royce is always working — whether it’s music or starring in the Hulu teen drama series “East Los High.”

“I’m always writing,” he says. “I have a studio in my home. This helps me balance my life. It’s easier for me to work at home and then fly off to go film ‘East Los High.’ I’d definitely love to see where film and TV takes me. I’ll never leave music.”

Prince Royce worked on “Five” for nearly two years because of the many collaborations on the album.

And he has 11 co-writing credits on the album.

“The album just happened organically,” he says. “I didn’t have writer’s block, and I enjoyed the process. I think over time, I’ve matured a lot, and my fans have grown with me. I sound different, and the content of the songs is more mature.”

In the seven years since releasing his debut album, Prince Royce is still surprised at how far he’s come as a performer and an artist.

He remembers touring on the first album and struggling to fill a set list.

“Now I’m five albums deep,” he says. “It’s crazy. The show is now two hours, and I have to cut them down. The set list is based on the vibes. I try to get as many songs as I can into the set, but there’s so much material to pull from that it can be a battle. But I’m grateful to be on my fifth album. It’s a blessing.”
