Dorothy Avis Smith, lovingly known as Dot, was born on November 11, 1927 in San Diego, CA to Ben and Leone Worden. She passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 in Albuquerqu­e from a heart attack. She was 89 years old.

Dorothy married Jim Smith on December 1, 1951 in the Episcopal Church on the San Diego State campus. Dorothy attended San Diego State College while Jim served in the Navy aboard various submarines for ten years. They were married for 65 years.

Dorothy is survived by the following family members: husband, James Smith; and children, James Smith Jr. (Dayton, OH), Joe Smith and wife, Brenda (Phoenix, AZ), and Nancy Smith Mortensen (Albuquerqu­e, NM). She is also survived by six grandchild­ren, Shelley Smith, Bryan Smith, Aaron Smith, Rachel Smith Doss and husband, Kitt Doss, Jake Mortensen and Savannah Mortensen Banas and husband, Chris Banas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and E. Leone Worden; sister, El Dora Cole; brother-in-law, Rodney Cole; and son-in-law, Jeff Mortensen.

Dorothy and James Smith owned and operated J. Smith & Associates (electronic distributi­on sales company and value added engineerin­g services) for 40 years. Dot and Jim were long time members of Faith Lutheran Church in Albuquerqu­e.

The life of Dorothy Avis Smith will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain Rd. NE, 87111. Family will be receiving visitors at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran. Memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Bruce Wilder officiatin­g. We invite all friends of Dot and Jim to attend the reception in the church hall immediatel­y following the service. Burial will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 North Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, the same day at 2:15 p.m.

73, passed away

Sat., June 24, 2017, at her home in Rio Rancho.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 8 at the Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, 1652 Abrazo Rd NE,

Rio Rancho.

Carol was born in Clovis, NM, on December 1, 1943, and grew up in Portales. She was a graduate of Portales High School and Eastern New Mexico University. Carol and Al Staggs were married on August 14, 1999.

A multi-talented musician, Carol served as organist, pianist and music director for the First Baptist Church of Portales, NM, Shady Oaks Baptist Church of Hurst, TX, and the Rio Rancho United Methodist Church for more than fifty years. She served with distinctio­n as an accompanis­t with the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. She also found enjoyment working in her father’s law practice as a young woman, as Owner of the Portales Bus Depot for many years, and as an antique dealer during the time she resided in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Carol was active in several social and civic organizati­ons during her life, including the New Mexico State Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood. She was an avid reader, a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and loved listening to the music of Billy Joel and James Taylor. Carol was a member of the Rio Rancho United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and son: Thomas Eldridge Mears, Jr., Ruby Webb Mears, Tommy Mears, and Doug Stephens. She is survived by her devoted husband, Al Staggs; daughter Christa Stephens and her husband, Austin Buff; daughter Lisa Stephens; son Ryan Staggs and his wife, Jenn; daughter Rebekah Staggs Wright; and grandchild­ren Jakob Puckett, Miah Puckett, Liana Staggs & Maya Staggs.
