51s pitcher attacked in Utah robbery attempt

-

A reliever with the Pacific Coast League’s Las Vegas 51s was attacked by a homeless man in an attempted robbery in Utah, authorities said, forcing the team to place the pitcher on the disabled list.

Logan Taylor was hit in the head with a tire iron after the man approached him and demanded his wallet while he was walking down a street in Salt Lake City on Saturday, police Detective Greg Wilking told the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. The man also had a sock full of rocks.

Manager Pedro Lopez said Taylor suffered a concussion and had to have staples put in the back of his head.

UMP SUES: Veteran umpire Angel Hernandez filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball on Monday, claiming that he has been repeatedly passed over for professional advancement, fitting into a broader pattern of racial discrimination.

Hernandez’s suit also alleges that MLB executive Joe Torre’s personal “animosity” toward him has contributed to a noticeable downturn in his fortunes.

The 55-year-old Hernandez, who was born in Cuba, has been an MLB umpire since 1993, and he worked the 2002 and 2005 World Series. However, his lawsuit claims that since Torre was named MLB’s chief baseball officer in 2011, World Series umpiring crews have been all-white except for one minority member, Alfonso Marquez, who worked the 2011 and 2015 Series.

Of the 92 umps on MLB’s official roster, 10 are Hispanic or African American, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

ASSAULT: In St. Paul, Minn., Anthony Craig Checky, a minor league player for the Gary SouthShore RailCats, was charged with assault for allegedly punching a wedding guest in the face at a hotel where his team was staying.

ASTROS: Shortstop Carlos Correa left Tuesday’s game at Atlanta with a thumb injury.

Correa, who was elected to start the All-Star Game, got hurt on a headfirst slide at home in the fourth. He appeared to jam his thumb as catcher Tyler Flowers tagged him out. The Astros say Correa is day to day.
