CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Aaron Montano of Albuquerqu­e caught a 25-inch channel catfish June 30 at Tingley Beach. He was using Velveeta cheese. Derrick Sandoval of Santa Fe caught a 5.5-pound walleye and a 3.5-pound walleye and an 8-pound, 9-ounce carp Sunday at Cochiti Lake. He caught the walleye on swim baits and the carp on a crank bait. Jace Bonner, 5, of Elk City, Okla., caught a 26-inch, 4.75-pound walleye June 30 at Elephant Butte Lake. He was fishing by the island in Rock Canyon and using a shiner minnow. At Lake Maloya, Tom Garcia of Raton caught an 8-pound rainbow trout June 26. He was using a gold spoon. … Adrian

Valdez of Raton caught a 25-inch, 6-pound rainbow trout June 27. He was using a gold Kastmaster. Pablo Herrera of Doña Ana caught a 29-inch buffalo carp that weighed between 8 and 10 pounds July 1 at Percha Dam. He was using worms. Geary Radcliffe caught a 20-inch channel catfish June 30 on the Rio Grande. He was fishing where the Old Buckman Road stops at the Rio and was using chicken liver.

AROUND THE STATE

HERON LAKE: Fishing has been pretty slow for trout and salmon. I still haven’t seen any sign of “schooling.” Fishing from shore has been really slow, but some people have been able to pick up a few nice-sized kokanee, 14 to 17 inches. Best trolling with yellow spinners tipped with corn. Not too many boats were out this holiday weekend, but camping was great. Water is still rising but not as quickly as it had been. Don Wolfley, Stone House Lodge NOTES from GAME & FISH: At TINGLEY BEACH, fishing was good using hot dogs, Velveeta cheese, night crawlers and beef liver for catfish. Fishing at COCHITI LAKE was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, creature baits. tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass. At EAGLE NEST LAKE, fishing was very good using worms for perch. Fishing at HOPEWELL LAKE was good using elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, PowerBait, Kastmaster­s and Fire Balls for trout. At LAKE MALOYA, trout fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, Colorado spoons, Kastmaster­s, woolly buggers and PowerBait. At MONASTERY LAKE, fishing was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Silver Label salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at MORPHY LAKE was good using Pistol Petes, woolly buggers, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the RED RIVER was very good using Mepps and Panther Martin spinners, Silver Label Fire Balls, PowerBait, night crawlers, spinners, copper John Barrs and woolly buggers for trout. The best action was reported by anglers fishing in town. Fishing at EL VADO LAKE was good trolling with Panther Martins and double whammies for a mixed bag of kokanee salmon and rainbow trout. Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE was fair to good using minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was good using Ricos, Whopper Ploppers, Pop Rs, finesse worms on drop shot rigs, jerk baits, woolly buggers and spinners for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing at ABIQUIU LAKE was good using curly tail grubs, spinners, woolly buggers, tubes, jerk baits, crank baits, woolly buggers, crawdad imitation flies and night crawlers for smallmouth bass. Streamflow on the CIMARRON RIVER below Eagle Nest on Monday was 6.28 cfs. Trout fishing was good using bead-head hares ear nymphs, elk hair caddis, PMDs, stimulator­s, Cimarron specials, worms, salmon eggs, PowerBait and spinners. Trout fishing on the SAN JUAN RIVER was good using San Juan worms, pink and cream egg patterns, chamois leeches, wooly buggers, red and orange annelids, RS2s and small jigs. Best action in the bait waters was for anglers using night crawlers, small spoons and jerk baits. Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was slow to fair using crankbaits and minnows for walleye. Fishing at BLUEWATER LAKE was slow to fair using jerk baits, swim baits and deep diving crank baits for tiger muskies up to 31 inches. At CONCHAS LAKE, fishing was good using shrimp, liver, cut bait and homemade dough bait for catfish.
