Stand-up comic Chris D’Elia at El Rey; Jewish Film Festival

-

Chris D’Elia prefers stand-up comedy to a TV series. His reasoning is simple. “Stand-up — it’s always just you,” he says in a recent phone interview. “TV is playing a character. Sure, it’s fun, but I enjoy when I get to be myself on stage.”

The 37-year-old comedian got his start on the stage while going to high school in Los Angeles.

For the better part of a decade, D’Elia has toured the country performing his comedy.

He’s made the jump to the small screen, getting cast in the sitcoms “Whitney” and “Undateable,” both which aired on NBC.

His most recent comedy special, “Man on Fire,” was released on Netflix this month. But he’s looking to be challenged, as he was in the coming film “Life in a Year.”

“I never want to do the same thing over and over,” he says. “I want to challenge myself with each role and project.”

D’Elia will be in the Duke City for a show at the Historic El Rey Theater on Saturday, July 15. To read more, see Page 23.
