Broncos in no hurry to pick a starting QB

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Patience, people.

Pro Bowl receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders recently added their voices to the din of Broncos fans calling for a quick resolution to Denver’s quarterback quandary .

Yet, coach Vance Joseph made it clear Wednesday he’s in no hurry to choose between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch .

“In my opinion, time allows for a fair competition, time allows for both guys to put their best foot forward and time allows for us to make a sound decision,” Joseph said as players reported for conditioning tests on the eve of training camp.

“So, to rush a decision without being sure makes no sense for anyone involved.”

Joseph acknowledged, however, that “it would be ideal” to have his starter declared by the time the Broncos face the Packers in their third preseason game a month from now.

Thomas and Sanders each said that they’d prefer the starter being named quickly so they can find their rhythm well ahead of the season opener Sept. 11 against the Chargers.

“It does matter what the players think because it’s their football team,” Joseph said. “But, it’s my job and the staff’s job to find the best guy for the job.”

Joseph noted that most teams work in the backup QB with the starters during camp, “so it should not matter to the players outside of Paxton and Trevor.”

The QBs will start every other day but they’ll alternate drills daily so that they work with the frontline offense frequently.

Joseph said the offense’s development won’t be stymied even if the QB competition drags on.

“That should not slow us down. In my opinion, it should help us play better once we find” the starter, Joseph said.

JETS: The Jets claimed wide receiver-kick returner Lucky Whitehead on Wednesday, two days after the Cowboys cut him following a shoplifting charge in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

PANTHERS: Cam Newton showed no ill effects from offseason shoulder surgery as the Panthers opened training camp Wednesday night at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

CHARGERS: The Chargers acquired quarterback Cardale Jones from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for an undisclosed conditional draft pick. The 6-foot-5 Jones led Ohio State to a national title during the 2014 season.

BROWNS: Cleveland already has its first win: Myles Garrett is ready for training camp.

The rookie defensive end and No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft has recovered from a foot sprain and will be on the field today when Cleveland opens camp

REDSKINS: Tight end Jordan Reed was a surprise inclusion on the Redskins’ physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp because of a toe injury.

RAMS: The Rams have signed veteran quarterback Dan Orlovsky.

Orlovsky is the third quarterback on the Rams’ roster. He is likely to compete with Sean Mannion for the backup job behind No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff.

VIKINGS: Everson Griffen signed a four-year extension with the Vikings on Wednesday, a new deal that would keep the twotime Pro Bowl defensive end under the team’s control through the 2022 season. He had two years remaining on the current contract.
