Mavericks in Taos; ‘Vietnam’ documentary preview to screen

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Raúl Malo is grateful he still gets to make music. In three decades in the music industry, the Grammy winner and member of The Mavericks has navigated through many obstacles.

“There are so many things playing against you in this industry,” he says. “It’s art; it’s culture. Sometimes you are your own biggest obstacle. That’ the most honest answer there.”

Malo and The Mavericks will perform at Kit Carson Park in Taos on Saturday, July 29. The band is touring in support of its latest album, “Brand New Day.”

The album also marks the first release on The Mavericks’ own label, Mundo Mono.”

“There’s a different kind of stress that goes along with the new freedom of owning a record label,” he says. “We’re getting to do music our way and having a lot of fun along the way.”

Attention, history lovers. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is at it again. Burns’ “The Vietnam War” will premiere in September. And New Mexicans will have a chance to see an hourlong preview to the 18-hour series because Burns’ editor, Paul Barnes, lives in Santa Fe. I caught up with Barnes to talk about the complexity of the process. To read more, see Page 9.

Odds are you’ve heard a song from The Steel Drivers. The bluegrass band has been covered by the likes of Adele, and back in 2008, Chris Stapleton was a member. The band will perform at the ABQ BioPark Zoo tonight. To read more, see Page 22.

Staff writer Rozanna M. Martinez has the latest on the Lockheed Martin Dyna Theater’s latest film, “Space Next.” To read more, see Pages 14-15.

Remember to check out our movie and dining reviews on Pages 4 and 16, respectively.
