Canessa, Andrew R.

Andrew R. Canessa of Albuquerque, NM passed away at the age of 86 on July 8, 2017 with his family at his side. Andrew was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 25, 1930. He is survived by his former spouse and lifetime love, Bernice Zimmer; and five children, Bernadette Ortega, Christina Delgado, Andrew Zimmer, Alicia Zimmer and Elizabeth Zimmer. He was preceded in death by his youngest child, Veroniz Zimmer and his grandson, Joseph Ortega, Jr. He is also survived by his children’s spouses plus nine grandchildren, their spouses and seven great-grandchildren. Andy was a devoted and beloved father and grandfather and took a committed interest in helping his loved ones through the complexities and challenges of life.

Andrew Canessa retired from the United States Army as a First Sergeant after serving nearly 23 years. He served two tours in Korean and three tours in the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars with Valor and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was also a Purple Heart recipient. He was an American Hero and brought great credit upon himself and the United States Army which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. He spoke so little of his time defending the country he loved but spoke so highly of those he was so honored to serve with.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming. A graveside service with full military honors will be held for family and close friends on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
