Carmen (Alice) Ortega, 88, beloved grandmothe­r and mother, was called to her eternal resting place on July 26, 2017. She was born on July 16, 1929 in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Jose and Pacifica Solano.

Carmen was preceded in death by her son, Michael and her husband of 43 years, Pablo F. Ortega, with whom she raised 13 children in Santa Fe, NM. For the past 12 years, she has lived in Albuquerqu­e. She is survived by 12 of her children, Gloria Rendon (Andrew), Pablo Ortega, John Ortega, Rose Rael (Antonio), Daniel Ortega (Julie), Loreen Mendiola (Anthony), Charles Ortega (Darlene), Martha Sisneros (Robert), Linda Ornelas, Leroy Ortega (Maria), Viola Liesse (Mark) and Alicia Ortega Trujillo (Jennifer); her grandchild­ren and their spouses and significan­t others, Rebecca, Andres, Adrian, Adam, Michael, Andrea, Eric, Anthony, Victoria, Gabrielle, Janelle, Charles J., Vanessa, Amanda, Ona, Jesse, Maria, Angelo, Pablo, Felicia, Rachel and Jordan; 17 great-grandchild­ren and many nieces and nephews.

Carmen worked as a nurse’s assistant for many years at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe. She was a devout Catholic and a devoted wife and mother. She leaves behind a strong and proud legacy in her children and grandchild­ren who all surrounded her during the last days of her life. The family is sincerely grateful to our sisters, Linda and Rose, who have been her primary caretakers for several years.

A Rosary will be held Friday, August 4, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 9:45 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NW in Albuquerqu­e. A Graveside service will be held Monday, August 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carmen’s name to St. Jude Catholic Church, www.stjudenm. org.
