Penitentes figure into tale of life between wars

Between the two World Wars in the remote mountain hamlets and villages of New Mexico, religious well-being was looked after by a cofradias, brotherhoo­ds, also known as Penitentes for their austere rituals and practices, some of which were done in secret.

In 1917, five years after New Mexico received its statehood, the U.S. entered World War I. With border tensions increasing between Mexico and the U.S., Germany attempted to secure Mexico’s allegiance with its Zimmermann Telegram. More than 16,000 New Mexicans joined the military, while civilians supported from the home front.
