Video released in officer-involved shooting
APD said that victim had pointed weapon at officer prior to gunfire
Albuquerque police on Wednesday released on-body camera footage that shows a fleeing suspect was armed with a gun and turning to face the officer when he was shot and killed.
The video supports the description of the shooting Albuquerque police officer Tanner Tixier, a police spokesman, gave reporters on Tuesday.
On Monday night, Albuquerque police officer Jon O’Guin attempted to pull over Robert Savelli, 43, who was driving a moped without a license plate near Vassar and Menaul NE.
Savelli, Tixier said, continued to drive north and O’Guin blocked him with a police vehicle.
Video from the surveillance footage across the street shows O’Guin park the police vehicle and exit quickly to try to catch Savelli, who ran north.
O’Guin’s on-body camera shows that Savelli was armed with a gun and had started to turn toward the officer when O’Guin fired.
“As you will see he had split milliseconds to react to the suspect’s actions,” Celina Espinoza, a police spokeswoman, said in an email.
After the shooting, O’Guin keeps his gun pointed at Savelli while additional officers respond. He repeatedly tells Savelli not to reach for the gun.
Savelli had warrants out for his arrest and a small amount of methamphetamine in his possession, Tixier said.
O’Guin was involved in at least one prior shooting. He shot and killed Dennis Humphrey during a standoff with police last year.
O’Guin has also appeared in news stories for buying a woman groceries and saving a choking puppy.
