‘The War Within’ a biographic­al novel about forced labor in WWII

AT BOOKWORKS: Patricia Walkow will read from “The War Within” at 3 p.m. today.

This book is a biographic­al novel of Josef, a teenage Christian Polish slave laborer, forced to work in Nazi Germany.

Cathryn Hankla will read from “Galaxies: Poems” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8.

As the opening poem “The Labyrinth Galaxy” suggests, this is not a book of astronomy, but a book of seeking and beseeching.

The Bookworks Book Club will discuss “The Art Forger” by B.A. Shapiro at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9.

In 1990, 13 works of art now worth more than $500 million were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Struggling young artist Claire Roth is about to discover that there’s more to this crime than meets the eye.

David Weisberg will talk about

“The American Plan” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10.

It is a daring and disturbing tale of survival set in Cuba and South

Florida in the 1950s and early ’60s.

Erika Wurth will sign “Buckskin Cocaine” and Steven Dunn will sign “Potted Meat” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. “Buckskin Cocaine” is a wild, beautiful ride into the seedy underworld of Native American film.

“Potted Meat,” a novel set in a decaying town in southern West Virginia, follows a young boy into adolescenc­e as he struggles with abusive parents, poverty, alcohol addiction and racial tensions.

FRIENDS FOR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY will hold its monthly used book, DVD and CD sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in the Main Library, 501 Copper NW. Admission is $2, free after 1 p.m. and free for members and children.
