LEADING OFF
FINDING HIS GROOVE: San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner, 1-2 despite a 2.78 ERA in five starts since his return from an April 20 dirt bike accident, faces the visiting Chicago Cubs today. Bumgarner is 8-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 regular-season starts against the Cubs. SWANSON WATCH: Atlanta rookie shortstop Johan Camargo, who took over as the starter when Dansby Swanson was demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett on July 27, hyperextended his right knee when running onto the field at the start of Tuesday night’s game vs. Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, Swanson was pulled from Gwinnett’s lineup, an indication he could be headed back to Atlanta.
DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC: When the Brewers and Twins meet today in Milwaukee, the pitchers will have an age gap of 20 years. Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff will take the mound after throwing 6⅓ scoreless innings in his debut last week. Minnesota’s Bartolo Colon, 44, will make his 518th start.
UMP SUSPENDED: Joe West, MLB’s senior umpire, has been suspended for three days for comments he made about Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre. In a USA Today report published June 20, West said “it’s got to be Adrian Beltre” when asked who was the biggest complainer in the major leagues. West also was quoted: “I had a game with him recently and the pitch was right down the middle. He tells me, ‘That ball is outside,’” West was quoted. “I told him, ‘You may be a great ballplayer, but you’re the worst umpire in the league. You stink.’”
