Area is most violent place in Albuquerque
Editor’s note: Today the Journal begins a five-part series on an analysis by the Albuquerque Innovation Team, which located five zones in the city with the most crime in 2014 through 2016. Here are details of the Southeast zone.
The Southeast zone, which includes much of what is known as the International District, is an area on both sides of Central Avenue from roughly Carlisle to Eubank.
It’s home to about 37,600 people, and a violent crime has happened in one of every 10 addresses in the area in the past three years; property crime has occurred in one of four addresses.
It was the most violent place in the city in the past three years and is home to both victims and suspects. While only 6.7 percent of the city’s population lives there, 27 percent of the city’s murders and 37 percent of the nonfatal shootings with injuries occurred there over the three-year period.
About a third of the people who have been arrested on suspicion of robbery throughout the city gave addresses in that area.
The McDonald’s and Circle K in the 8600 block of Central reported the most violent crimes in that area with 98 reported at the site.
Much of the crime occurred at or near apartment complexes and large businesses.
Regarding murders, most of the 34 victims in that area had prior arrests, with half of them showing 10 or more arrests on their record. Of the 26 people arrested for murder in that area, five had 10 or more arrests.
