Homicide detectives and the bomb squad responded to a Northeast Albuquerque neighborhood after a man was found dead late Saturday, according to police.

Officer Simon Drobik said that officers arrived near the 7200 block of Constitution around 11 p.m. after a caller reported that a roommate shot himself. Officers arrived and found a 38-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound. His name has not been released.

“The death appears suspicious and investigators received information there may be explosives inside the residence,” Drobik said.

The bomb squad was then called around 4 a.m. “to render the property safe” after suspicious items in the house were found, Drobik said. The bomb squad didn’t find anything dangerous.

Nearby at the Jerry Cline Park, tennis players from around the Southwest were competing in the United States Tennis Association’s league championships.

Meanwhile, detectives with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office were investigating a suspicious death after responding to a call of a shooting Sunday morning, according to a spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives arrived on scene around 9:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of Potomac Circle SW, near Isleta and Interstate 25, Capt. Broderick Sharp said. Sharp was unable to say how the victim died, or give the age or sex of the victim.

Sharp said that officers are in the process of applying for a warrant but did not say why a warrant is being sought.

The 17-year-old shot to death as he played video games Friday at his home near Zuni and Pennsylvania was heading into his senior year at Del Norte High School, according to his mother.

Obed Cruz’s death is being investigated as a homicide, and police are asking anyone with information on his death to contact them.

KOAT reported that Liudmila Rodriguez, Cruz’s mother, said she warned him to be careful when he heard knocks at the door but “the door got forced.”

When Cruz stopped responding to a friend while playing video games, the friend went to his home and found Cruz dead. Police have not released further information on his death.
