Words of inspiration dot Lobo locker room

- BY GEOFF GRAMMER JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

There aren’t cheesy posters of kittens hanging from trees telling Lobo players to “Hang in there” or ones showing picturesque sunsets at the beach scenes inspiring tranquility. Not yet, anyway. But Paul Weir does fall into that demographic of people who is all about the power of a well-timed, appropriate quote to invoke a desired reaction from those around him.

Sometimes, it’s about inspiration or motivation. Other times, it’s merely about getting his team to simply think in ways the players normally don’t.

As such, he not only has numerous quotes and photos hanging on the walls around the Lobos locker room and basketball offices. After a recent photo shoot with the Journal had him using a special marker on glass, he decided he liked the idea enough to start writing quotes all over the glass office windows around the Rudy Davalos Center practice facility.

Among the quotes Lobo players see hanging around from recent weeks:

“THE MOST DANGEROUS PHRASE IN THE LANGUAGE IS, ‘WE’VE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS WAY.’” ADMIRAL GRACE MURRAY HOPPER “I AM NOT TALENTED. I AM OBSESSED.” CONOR MCGREGOR, UFC CHAMPION “WE DON’T WANT TO BE THE BEST ONES DOING SOMETHING. WE WANT TO BE THE ONLY ONES DOING IT.” GRATEFUL DEAD MUSICIAN JERRY GARCIA “THE ONES WHO SAY YOU CAN’T ARE TOO AFRAID YOU WILL.” ECONOMIST ZIAD K. ABDELNOUR “IF YOU EVEN DREAM OF BEATING ME UP, YOU’D BETTER WAKE UP AND APOLOGIZE.” MUHAMMAD ALI ALONG WITH THE ICONIC PHOTO OF ALI STANDING ABOVE THE KNOCKED-OUT SONNY LISTON IN 1965
