Stanton continues homer barrage

Hoskins helps Phils wallop Cubs; Indians get 13th shutout of year

MIAMI — Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, increasing his MLB-leading total to 49, and tied a career high with five RBIs, as the Miami Marlins climb above .500 for the first time since April with an 8-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Miami grabbed the lead for good on Marcell Ozuna’s three-run drive in the seventh. It was Ozuna’s 30th homer of the season.

Stanton’s home run total is the highest in the National League since Prince Fielder hit 50 for Milwaukee in 2007 — and the Marlins still have 35 games to play.

PHILLIES 7, CUBS 1: In Philadelph­ia, rookie Rhys Hoskins hit another homer and Cesar Hernandez hit a three-run triple to back Jerad Eickhoff (4-7) as Philadelph­ia beat Chicago.

Hoskins has nine homers and 21 RBIs in 16 games. No player in major league history has reached nine homers that quickly.

INDIANS 4, ROYALS 0: In Cleveland, rookie Ryan Merritt pitched a career-high 6⅔ innings as Cleveland got its AL-leading 13th shutout with a win over Kansas City.

Merritt (1-0) was called up from TripleA Columbus before the game to take the injured Danny Salazar’s spot in the rotation. He yielded seven hits for his second career win.

Three relievers finished the eight-hitter for the AL Central leaders.

TWINS 6, BLUE JAYS 1: In Toronto, Minnesota right-hander Bartolo Colon (6-10) pitched 6 ⅔ innings for his second straight win, and Byron Buxton had three hits and two RBIs as Minnesota defeated Toronto.

Joe Mauer had three hits and scored twice as the Twins snapped a seven-game losing streak north of the border.

BRAVES 5, ROCKIES 2: In Atlanta, Matt Kemp and Kurt Suzuki homered, and Julio Teheran won at home for the first time in four months as Atlanta beat Colorado..

Teheran (8-11) allowed two runs and five hits in 7⅓ innings while stopping an Atlanta record streak of nine straight home losses.

REDS 9, PIRATES 5: In Cincinnati, Reds rookie Robert Stephenson fanned a careerhigh 11, and Scott Schebler drove in three runs with a homer in a win over Pittsburgh.

Stephenson (2-4) stymied Pittsburgh with sharp-breaking pitches in his fifth start and 19th overall appearance, allowing two runs in 5 ⅔ innings.

The right-hander fanned the first six batters for a modern Reds record.

MARINERS 2, YANKEES 1 (11): In New York, Yonder Alonso homered on a 100 mph fastball from demoted closer Aroldis Chapman in the 11th as Seattle beat New York.

Mike Zunino homered and had three hits for the Mariners. They used seven pitchers

to hold down the Yankees.

ORIOLES 16, RED SOX 3: In Boston, Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis had home runs, and Baltimore used a seven-run fifth inning to power past Boston and Rick Porcello (8-15).

The 16 runs is a season-high for the Orioles, who have won three out their last four. Trey Mancini led Baltimore with four RBIs.

DODGERS 3, BREWERS 1: In Los Angeles, Kenta Maeda (12-5) allowed one hit through six innings — a homer by Dominto Santana — and struck out seven as LA defeated Milwaukee.

Three relievers completed the one-hit triumph that improved the Dodgers’ leaguelead­ing record to 91-36. DIAMONDBAC­KS 4, GIANTS 3: In Phoenix, Paul Goldschmid­t hit a three-run home run and Arizona held on to beat San Francisco to give Zack Greinke his 15th win of the season.

With his 30th home run and 101st RBI, Goldschmid­t became the first Arizona player in franchise history to have three seasons with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

RAYS 7, CARDINALS 3: In St. Louis, Corey Dickerson had four hits, including two doubles, as Tampa Bay beat St. Louis for its fourth win in five games. METS 4, NATIONALS 2: In Washington, New York’s Jacob deGrom (14-7) had 10 strikeouts in 7⅔ innings in a win over Washington. ASTROS 2, ANGELS 1: In Anaheim, Calif., Houston’s George Springer scored on a wild pitch by Parker Bridwell to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth as the Astros topped Los Angeles.

ATHLETICS 3, RANGERS 1: In Oakland, Calif., Khris Davis hit a go-ahead homer leading off the seventh after his tying solo shot in the fourth as Oakland beat Texas.

WHITE SOX 3, TIGERS 2: In Chicago, Tim Anderson led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and Yolmer Sanchez followed with an RBI single that sent Chicago past Detroit.
