Pats’ Edelman, KC’s Ware suffer knee injuries

- FROM JOURNAL WIRES

ALLEN, Mich. — Wide receiver Julian Edelman limped off the field with an injured right knee Friday, putting a damper on a strong game from Tom Brady and New England.

Edelman was hurt when tackled by safety Detroit’s Tavon Wilson, a former teammate. ESPN reports that a Pats source suspects Edelman tore his ACL.

Brady was 12-for-15 for 174 yards with two TDs and an interception. He helped New England take a 24-0 lead in the first quarter.

Detroit QB Matthew Stafford finished 15-for-22 for 190 yards, two TDs and an interception. SEAHAWKS 26, CHIEFS 13: In Seattle, Kansas City may be looking for a starting running back after Spencer Ware injured his right knee in the Chiefs’ loss to Seattle.

Ware appeared to take an awkward step with his right leg after making a reception. He was taken off the field on a cart.

Seattle QB Russell Wilson threw for 200 yards and a touchdown.

HURRICANE HARVEY: The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have discussed contingency plans for Thursday’s preseason finale if Hurricane Harvey heads toward the Houston.

Cowboys Executive VP Stephen Jones said playing the game at AT&T Stadium is an option, if needed. Thursday is an open date at the stadium. The game is scheduled to be played at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

“We’ll make it available if we need to,” Jones said Friday.

Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, hit land near Corpus Christi late Friday. As of Friday, the Cowboys still planned to go to Houston.

HALL OF FAME: Longtime GM and personnel administrator Bobby Beathard is a finalist for the Hall of Fame in the contributors category.

He helped build strong teams in football stops in Kansas City (1966-67), Miami (1972-77), Washington (19781988) and San Diego (1990-99). He also worked for Atlanta (1968-1971).

49ERS: San Francisco released outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks after eight seasons with the team.

The Niners cut Brooks because they determined he would not make the roster and wanted to give him a head start on finding a new team.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville owner Shad Khan said he would be open to signing QB Colin Kaepernick.

Speaking to the team’s flagship radio station, Khan responded “absolutely” when asked Thursday if he would support signing Kaepernick if the team’s front office wanted to do it.

According to 1010 XL, Khan said that while he would not have knelt during the national anthem to protest social injustice in the United States the way Kaepernick did, the billionaire businessman respects the QB’s right to express his beliefs.

Tom Coughlin, the team’s executive VP, has final say on personnel decisions. He declined comment Friday.

Kaepernick is unsigned after opting out of his contract with the 49ers.
