Eatery expansion
Popular Nob Hill restaurant Matanza Beer Kitchen opens second location on West Side
A Nob Hill favorite is expanding to the West Side. Matanza Beer Kitchen, located in Nob Hill, is opening a second location today at Alameda and Ellison NW.
The 10,000-square-foot space includes a covered patio, a banquet room and an all-glass wine cellar. The restaurant and bar will feature 100 New Mexico craft beers, 100 New Mexico wines and a full liquor license allowing it to sell New Mexico spirits.
Chef and owner Peter Gianopolous said the new Matanza will include everything the Central Avenue location offers, with a few additions.
“It’s the same menu, but we are adding quite a few things to the Matanza smoked meats section,” he said.
Matanza opened its first location in September 2015, serving a wide variety of local beers and cooking up unique New Mexican dishes like blue corn duck tamales and kale-and-wild-mushroom blue corn enchiladas.
Gianopolous signed a lease for the second location in February and has been doing renovation since. “We have a really Southwestern but modern look,” Gianopolous said.
The location has had numerous previous tenants including Quarters, according to Gianopolous, but he is excited to enter a new market and says the building is perfect.
“I was looking, and I just felt this part of town deserved something local,” he said. “It’s a lot of chains. This part of town is getting more sophisticated.”
