Thieves led authorities on a reckless chase Thursday night, in separate vehicles, after trying to run over deputies in southwest Albuquerque, according to a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Ryan Shook, 37, and John Brumett, 51, are both charged with aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, aggravated eluding, breaking and entering and transferring a stolen motor vehicle, among other offenses. Another suspect is still on the loose.

Deputy Felicia Maggard said it started when deputies responded to a break-in and silent alarm activation at an auto yard around 9 p.m. near Broadway and Rio Bravo SW.

There, deputies watched as two men tried to hitch a camper to a semitrailer truck while a Ford F-450 idled nearby, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

A deputy pulled his gun and began giving commands when the Ford fled the scene, almost hitting the deputy, who dove out of the way, and two other deputy vehicles.

Deputies say the semi fled right after, crashing a car through a chain-link fence before exiting through the damaged fence and going north on Broadway.

“A pursuit of both vehicles ensued,” Maggard said.

Brumett led deputies on a chase into northeast Albuquerque, almost causing multiple crashes, that ended when the Ford crashed into a Albuquerque Police Department CSI van at Kentucky and Summer NE.

The semitrailer truck fled down Interstate 25 and Broadway, driving into oncoming traffic and causing at least one crash, before a head-on collision at Woodward and Second SW ended the chase.

“Deputies gave the commands to the driver to exit the vehicle with no response. Deputies noticed the driver door was open,” a deputy wrote in the complaint. “It is unknown where the driver of the semi went.”

Deputies found Shook in the passenger seat and took him into custody. The third suspect is still at large.

Maggard said the drivers caused two separate crashes during the pursuit but there were no major injuries.

“Incidents like this are not taken lightly. I am thankful no major injuries resulted because of the actions of these reckless offenders. Deputies took immediate action to bring safety to the community and took two violent offenders off the streets of Bernalillo County,” Sheriff Manuel Gonzales said in a news release.
