Young’s four TDs lead Volcano Vista

QB Byrd lifts Manzano, 48-0

LAS CRUCES — Running back Moses Young scored all four touchdowns for Volcano Vista, and the visiting Hawks routed Mayfield 29-0 in prep football on Friday night at the Field of Dreams.

The Trojans fell to 0-4 for the first time since 1990.

The Hawks (3-1) scored on an early safety, the result of a poor punt snap by Mayfield.

Young delivered the next two touchdowns (on runs) for Volcano Vista, which surged in front 15-0 in the second quarter. The Hawks piled up 265 yards in the first half and their defense limited Mayfield — which has had trouble scoring points all season — to just 50 yards.

Young caught a 4-yard touchdown reception from Volcano Vista quarterbac­k Austin Blaisure in the third quarter for a 22-0 lead, and he capped the scoring with a third rushing TD late in the game.

Mayfield was shut out for the second time this season. ELDORADO 43, ALBUQUERQU­E HIGH 8: At Wilson Stadium, the Eagles (3-1) celebrated homecoming with a resounding victory over the Bulldogs (1-2) as quarterbac­k Gabe Smith had a strong first half throwing the ball.

NORTE 0: At Milne Stadium, senior quarterbac­k Jordan Byrd threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more as the Monarchs rolled over the Knights (0-4).

Junior running back Xavier Ivey-Saud added two rushing touchdowns for the third-ranked Monarchs (4-0), who play host to No. 1 Rio Rancho at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Wilson Stadium.

The Knights fell to 0-4. — Journal Staff HIGHLAND 28, VALENCIA 14: in Tomé, the Hornets pulled out all the stops in the first half and shut down the Jaguar offense in the second half to earn their first victory of the season.

It was also the first career win for new Highland coach Phil Lovato.

Highland (1-2) used squib kickoffs to gain possession of the ball three times, springboar­ding to scores with two of them in the victory.

The Hornets’ Josh Savage started the game with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and put the game away in the fourth quarter with a breakaway 40-yard run.

The senior finished the game with 220 yards of total offense, unofficial­ly, rushing for 119 yards on 10 carries and one catch for 30 yards.

Hive quarterbac­k Leroy Howard was 4-of-5 passing for 115 yards, including a 51-yard strike in the second quarter as Highland amassed 410 yards off offense, 295 of that on the ground.

Valencia (1-3) was paced by junior running back Devon Martinez, who scored on runs of 15 and 2 yards on the first half and finished with 110 yards on 28 carries. The Jaguar D forced three turnovers and the offense had 154 yards at the break but only gained 57 yards after halftime to finish with 211 yards, unofficial­ly. ELSEWHERE: In a matchup of top-5 teams in Class 5A on Friday night, Roswell scored late to edge Los Lunas 22-18 at the Wool Bowl. It is the first loss of the season for the Tigers (3-1). … Cibola (0-4) had a 20-0 lead at Ralph Bowyer Stadium in Carlsbad on Friday night, only to see the Cavemen storm back and win the game late, 21-20. … West Las Vegas won its homecoming game over visiting Albuquerqu­e Academy, 48-0. … Moriarty improved to 4-0, blanking visiting Española Valley 42-0.

TODAY: St. Pius only lost one game all of last season, at Alamogordo. Today the Sartans play host to the Tigers at Nusenda Community Stadium. … Valley and Rio Rancho both have games today at the Field of Dreams. The Vikings play Las Cruces at 1 p.m., and the Rams have a rare Saturday night game against Oñate at 7 p.m. … Hope Christian also is in action today, playing host to Grants at 1 p.m. at Milne Stadium. … Albuquerqu­e’s newest varsity team, Mission Achievemen­t and Success, plays its firstever varsity vs. varsity contest at 2 this afternoon, at Cobre.
