HALL OF HONOR’S CLASS IS UP TO PAR

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

Pro golfers Tim Herron and Jodi Ewart Shadoff are in the next class of UNM Athletic Hall of Honor. The induction dinner takes place in November.

The University of New Mexico Alumni Lettermen’s Association has announced that six individuals — Wayne Gares (baseball, basketball, football), Tim Herron (golf), Richard Howard (track and field), Jodi Ewart Shadoff (golf), Charles Smith (basketball), and Mandi Moore Stovall (basketball) — will be inducted into the UNM Athletic Hall of Honor on Friday, Nov. 3.

In addition, Sue Jollensten (tennis) will be inducted as the 2017 Distinguished Service Award winner.

Along with the Hall of Honor inductees, the 2016-17 Coach of the Year Bob Davie (football); Male Athletes of the Year Dakota Cox (football) and Josh Kerr (track and field); and Female Athlete of the Year Alice Wright (cross country/track and field) will be celebrated.

Kerr won a pair of national titles during his outstanding 2017 campaign, sweeping the mile run and the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor championships. He is just the 11th athlete in NCAA history — and the first since 2008 — to accomplish the indoor/outdoor sweep.

Davie’s football team shared a Mountain Division title in the Mountain West Conference and won the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

Cox was the leading tackler on that 9-4 team with 91 total stops, 26 more than the next highest Lobo.

Wright was the Mountain West and Mountain Regional winner in cross country last fall and finished second in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoors meet.

Fans can attend the awards dinner at 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque. Tickets are $60 each or $600 for a table of 10. Call the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Association at 925-5905 to purchase tickets.
