CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Paul Sanchez of Albuquerqu­e caught a 25-inch rainbow trout Sept. 17 at Laguna del Campo. He was using salmon eggs. Marcus Devlin, 16, of Belen, caught a 30-inch, 10-pound catfish Sept. 16 on the Rio Grande. He was using chicken liver. John Claypool, 79, of Logan, caught and released a 10½-pound blue catfish Sept. 17 at Ute Lake. He was running a trotline baited with crayfish.

Jesse Soveranez, 14, of Farmington, caught a 20¾-inch trout Sept. 2 on the San Juan River. He was fishing the bait waters and using night crawlers.

AROUND THE STATE

SHADY LAKES: The trout continue to bite actively on night crawlers, salmon eggs and lures. The easy catch pond is fishing fairly fast, and fish are averaging 12 inches. Bass and bluegill are catch-and-release only. Bluegill activity is strong on flies and worms. Highest number of bass are caught on plastics and top-water lures. Fall hours: closed Monday and Tuesday; Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. NOTES from GAME & FISH: Fishing on the ALBUQUERQU­E DRAIN was fair using night crawlers for catfish and a few small bass. Fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, stink bait, beef liver and shrimp for channel catfish. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Ponds was slow, with just a few trout and largemouth bass caught by anglers using small emergers and singlehook crank baits. Monday morning water flows on the CHAMA RIVER below El Vado and Abiquiu were 699 cfs and 709 cfs, respective­ly. Fishing below El Vado was good using bead-head woolly buggers, copper John Barrs, custom-tied flies, spinners, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. At ABIQUIU LAKE, fishing was good using tubes, grubs, 6-inch worms, spoons, square bill crank baits and top-water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using 4-inch spoons and curly-tail grubs tipped with night crawlers for walleye. Anglers fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye also picked up a few crappie. Fishing was good using worms, liver, homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing at MONASTERY LAKE was very good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. Streamflow on the RIO GRANDE on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 252 cfs. Fishing was good using peacock nymphs, copper John Barrs, woolly buggers, BWOs, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and night crawlers for browns, cutbows and rainbow trout. At EAGLE ROCK LAKE, fishing was very good using Zeke’s trout bait, PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. At EAGLE NEST LAKE, fishing for trout was good trolling spinners on lightweigh­t tackle and using PowerBait from the shore and from anchored boats. Fishing was good using large spinners and spoons and perch colored crank baits for northern pike up to 30 inches. Trout fishing at LAKE MALOYA was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and woolly buggers. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing pressure was light. At UTE LAKE, fishing was very good using stink bait, liver, cut bait and night crawlers over baited holes for catfish. Streamflow on the JEMEZ RIVER near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 12.4 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using worms and salmon eggs. Fishing on the CEBOLLA was good using worms, small spinners and Fire Balls. Fishing on the SAN ANTONIO was good using ant patterns, worms and salmon eggs. Streamflow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was 641 cfs. Fly-fishing action through the quality waters was good for anglers using olive woolly buggers, small emergers, red annelids, San Juan worms, dead chickens and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, PowerBait, Fire Balls, San Juan worms and jerk baits. Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE was good using top-water lures, crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, creature bait and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, top-water lures, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms and grubs for perch Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was good using shrimp and cut bait for catfish. At BLUE HOLE PARK POND, fishing was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing at EL RITO CREEK was good using small spoons, PowerBait and worms for trout. At GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR, fishing was good using woolly buggers, worms, PowerBait and spinners for smallmouth bass, rainbow trout and perch.
