A“transcendent romance” between an elderly German author and a man researching the attempted escape of Jewish refugees to North America prior to World War II is told through Teatro Paraguas’ newest production starting tonight.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz’s 2016 play, “Sotto Voce,” tells the story of eighty-something Bernadette. The love of her life died after he boarded the S.S. St. Louis in 1939 along with hundreds of other Jewish men and women from Germany. Both Cuba and the U.S. turned the boat away, and more than 250 died during the Holocaust when they were forced back to Europe. Bernadette is contacted by CubanJewish man, Saquiel, who is researching the voyage, which also claimed his great-aunt, and wants to speak with her about her story. She later experiences a dream-like affair in which Saquiel is her deceased lover and she is young again. Shows start today and run until Oct. 15, Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission is $20; $10 on Thursdays. Tickets can be purchased at the door, 3205 Calle Marie, or at brownpapertickets.com.

WINE AND CHILE: Festivities for the 27th annual Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta heat up this weekend, through Sunday. Friday’s various national guest chef lunches, seminars, and the evening’s wine-tasting and silent auction, some of which still have spots available, lead up to the main event: Saturday’s Grand Tasting at the Santa Fe Opera, 301 Opera Drive. Bites from 75 restaurants and 100 wineries will be available for the 21-and-over-only crowd from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $150; a $25 parking pass is sold separately. A shuttle service will be provided from the corner of Paseo de Peralta and Old Santa Fe Trail, where there will be free parking on the PERA Building’s lot. The final Fiesta day, Sunday, starts with the 8 a.m. bike ride, which has options for a 25-, 45- or 75-mile loop, with food pitstops. The ride ends with local tacos and champagne. Tickets are $75. Information and tickets are available at santa fe wine and chile. org.

SHINS KICK IT IN NM: A Grammynominated band with roots in the Land of Enchantment is returning with a show at the Santa Fe Opera on Wednesday. The Shins, indie rock icons who released their fifth album, “Heartworms,” in March, began a headlining tour last week and the Opera is its only New Mexico stop. James Mercer of Albuquerque formed the band in 1996 and parted ways with the original group years ago. The group’s first album, “Oh, Inverted World,” was a critics’ favorite. Its third, 2007’s “Wincing the Night Away,” was nominated for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy. Newcomer and oneman-band Day Wave will open for the Shins, now based in Portland. Tickets range from $43.50-$54.50 and are available at holdmyticket. com. Meow Wolf is organizing the concert.
