‘Tremors’ comes to town
TV pilot based on 1990 cult hit movie will be filmed in Albuquerque
“Tremors” became a cult classic when it was released in 1990. Now it’s making the leap to TV. According to the New Mexico Film Office, “Tremors,” a TV pilot for SYFY will begin principal photography in Albuquerque at the end of October through November.
“We’re pleased to welcome another great pilot to our state. It’s great news for our economy,” said Film Office Director Nick Maniatis. “New Mexico’s versatile filming environment where you have access to a variety of sceneries as well as top notch studios and workforce makes us a perfect place for productions of this kind.”
“Tremors” will take fans of the acclaimed 1990 film back to Perfection, Nev., where, 25 years after Valentine McKee, played by Kevin Bacon, defeated the Graboids, the man who
once seemed destined for greatness is anything but.
He’s a small-town hero whose glory days faded away with the monsters he braved and whose family moved on when he couldn’t let go of the past.
And yet McKee’s hoping that everything’s about to change.
His grown daughter coming to visit on the heels of her graduation could signal a permanent homecoming. But no sooner than she arrives, strange and terrifying events make it clear the town is in danger.
Led by McKee, the gang from Perfection begins to uncover the spine-chilling truth of what’s hunting them. With the future looking darker than ever, these small-town heroes must shake off the dust of years to see what they’re made of.
According to the film office, the production will employ approximately 230 New Mexico crew members and approximately 300 New Mexico background talent.
“We are excited to be the host city for Universal Cable Productions TV pilot, ‘Tremors’,” said Mayor Richard J. Berry, in a statement. “The film industry continues to be a strong economic driver for Albuquerque, providing high-paying creative jobs to our citizens, as well as positively affecting various industries around town, such as lumber companies and prop houses.”
The TV pilot is written and executive produced by showrunner Andrew Miller with Bacon, David Schiff and Butch Kaplan also producing.
Shiloh Fernandez and Toks Olagundoye are also attached to the production.
