- CATCHES OF THE WEEK AROUND THE STATE

C.J. Williams of Rio Rancho caught a 22-inch rainbow trout Friday at Fenton Lake.

Johnny Thomas of Fort Sumner caught and released a 26½-inch, 5-pound, walleye Saturday at Sumner Lake.

SHADY LAKES: The trout continue to bite actively on night crawlers, salmon eggs and lures. The easy-catch pond is fishing fairly fast, and fish are averaging 12 inches. Bass and bluegill are catch-and-release only. Bluegill activity is strong on flies and worms. Bass are caught on plastic and top-water lures.

ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes has been fair. Anglers have reported catching catfish on chicken liver, stink baits and night crawlers.

NOTES from GAME & FISH: At FENTON LAKE, fishing was very good using worms, wax worms, PowerBait, Fire Balls, spinners, streamers and small spoons for brown and rainbow trout. Streamflow on the JEMEZ RIVER near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 56.6 cfs. Early last week, trout fishing was very good using mop flies, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms on the CEBOLLA, JEMEZ and SAN ANTONIO. Then the rains came. Fishing at MONASTERY LAKE was very good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. Trout fishing at LAKE MALOYA was fair to good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and salmon eggs. At LAKE ALICE, fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. At EAGLE ROCK LAKE, fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout. At EAGLE NEST LAKE, fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was good using large spinners, crank baits and spoons for northern pike. Streamflow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was 616 cfs. Fly-fishing action through the quality waters was good for anglers using San Juan worms, woolly buggers, red annelids, mini mac midges and small beadhead pheasant tail nymphs. There was some baetis activity, but it was sporadic. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, gold spoons, PowerBait, Fire Balls and jerk baits. Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE was good using worms, spinners and grubs for perch. Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was good using shrimp and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using crank baits, top water lures and Kastmaster­s for white bass. The best white bass action has been at the south end. Fishing was very good at GLENWOOD POND using Fire Balls and assorted colors of PowerBait for trout. At GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR, fishing was very good using woolly buggers, worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and small Kastmaster­s for rainbow trout. Fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, stink bait, beef liver, homemade dough bait and shrimp for channel catfish.
