Here’s the gear for better biking

Industry trade show reveals the next cool and quirky things for your ride

Interbike, the annual North American bikeindustry trade show, held its final Las Vegas appearance late last month. I got the scoop on a few neat new products coming to market next year.

THERMOPLASTIC TUBES — Step aside, rubber. A new material offers riders a different kind of inner tube that’s lighterweight and packs small. The Tubolito tubes are made of thermoplastic and touted to be 65 percent lighter than traditional rubber options.

BURLEY BIKE TRAILER — Known for its kid carriers, Burley takes a run at the bike-trailer market. The Coho XC is a customizable trailer with three wheel sizes, including a fat-tire option for sand, snow, or rough terrain.

MOLDABLE BIKE SEAT — Much like customizable footwear for skiing, the Reform saddle from Landyachtz is heat-moldable to your anatomy. A 20-minute process results in a perfect fit, the brand says. The saddle has a leather top and a carbon-fiber shell.

BMX REDUX — Anyone who grew up in the ’80s racing a BMX bike probably remembers Pete Loncarevich. With a lightning-fast, smooth style, he epitomized speed. For 2018, Haro unveiled a “Pistol Pete” tribute bike with 29-inch wheels and chromoly frame. It’s ready for dirt jumps or the trail.

‘STEALTH’ ROAD E-BIKE — With a carbon frame, internal cable routing, and an integrated (hidden) battery and motor, the Focus Project-Y is the stealthiest e-bike I’ve seen. Its tiny electric motors gives pedal-assist power to let you ride faster or crank up tall hills. At a quoted 27 pounds, it may be the lightest of its kind, too.
