Robert M. Gordon
Robert M. Gordon, age 93 of Albuquerque, died at his home on October 9, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Inez Gordon, two grandsons, Bailey and Patrick Nelson, and son-in-law, John O’Neil.
Robert is survived by two daughters, Elaine O’Neil and Joyce McAdams; three grandchildren, Coleen Nelson, Meegan Schanning and Melanie Madrid; five great- grandchildren, David, Zachary, Abigail, Michael and Oliver; four nephews, Allen, Keith, Tyson, and David Taylor, and son-in-law, Roy McAdams.
Robert was born in Como, Mississippi on August 3rd 1924. During WWII, Robert received an offer he couldn’t refuse from Uncle Sam and was stationed in New Jersey where he married the love of his life Virginia Inez Taylor.
After his military career, Robert and Virginia worked in Jackson, Tennessee for WTJS, a radio station where he worked as chief engineer. They moved to Albuquerque in 1952 when he was offered a job working in television for KGGM and later he worked as Director for the local PBS affiliate KNME Channel 5 until he retired in 1987.
Robert was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, and uncle. He will always be remembered as the most loving husband as he cared for his wife for many years almost single handedly. They were the most romantic couple and were always together, best friends and found each other interesting until the end.
Robert’s hobbies included being a ham radio operator, gardening, cooking, and photography. He was fascinated with the radio communications and spent many years working on improving his equipment to get a better signal. Robert was curious about everything and never lost his interest and involvement with everything around him. He could fix anything and was the most creative problem solver. He managed to stay involved and thinking about issues while always respecting others points of view. He was an old fashion gentleman who treated everyone with respect and as a friend. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity. Robert always maintained a positive outlook on life and always saw the bright side of issues. He will be remembered as a person who faced life’s disappointments and hardships without complaining. He always maintained strength and perseverance.
Robert is greatly loved by his family and will be missed by all. Private family services have been conducted and there will be a military service at a later time in Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to KNME public television.
